Wow, has hell frozen over for Jerry Sullivan? Sully's article today was his usual doom and gloom situation when it comes to the Bills season. No argument from me. What caught my eye was when he talked about what Ralph Wilson should do to cure the Bills woes.
Normally, I'm skeptical when fans clamor to bring back players from the Super Bowl era. But what does Wilson have to lose? Many former players are dismayed with the state of affairs. After the Bills lost in Miami last month, Darryl Talley said some of the current Bills didn't deserve to wear the uniform.
Kelly and Thomas aren't working in the NFL. They're not wired in. But neither was Levy. They have credibility with players, and with the public. Wilson owes his fans a gesture, some sign that he understands people's frustration, even if it's the simple act of giving two Bills legends a voice.
-Jerry Sullivan-
Levy is the key in that statement. Everyone knows part of the reason Levy was brought back was to make fans feel good about the team again. We all know how the Levy experiment went (We are still living it).
Buffalo is the only sports town that thinks their former players should run, own, and play for their team till the end of time. I've never heard a Knicks fan who thinks Patrick Ewing should be the GM or a Jets fan who thinks Joe Namath should coach the team. God, how many times have I heard fans clamour for Kelly or Thomas to be involved with the team.
Bringing in Bills legends as consultants will do nothing for the team on the field, besides make fans feel good about their childhood memories. I know the "what does Wilson have to lose" theory may hold a cup of water. But seriously, it would be nothing more than a PR move and a just another reason to slow the process of finding legit football people to run the franchise.
God, now I can just see the Bills reading off the statement that Jauron will still be the coach in 2010 because of injuries and youth, then they will intro the round table of old Bills players as consultants. That will put some butts in the seat (Not kidding either, idiots!).
